Existing Digital Humanities Capacity

The Ice House Museum has successfully developed and implemented interactive digital humanities projects that make local history more accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. One example is the museum's interactive exhibit, The Texas Revolution in East Texas, which is available both online and as a touchscreen exhibit within the museum.

Developed in-house, the project combines historical research, interpretive content, historical mapping, photographs, and multimedia presentations to help visitors explore the people, places, and events associated with the Texas Revolution in East Texas. Visitors can navigate an interactive map of 1836 Texas, explore historical locations, and access interpretive materials through embedded hotspots that connect historical events to specific places and stories.

The exhibit was intentionally designed to engage students, families, and visitors who may have limited prior knowledge of Texas history. By encouraging exploration and discovery, the project helps audiences better understand the historical experiences of settlers, soldiers, Native peoples, and communities that shaped the development of East Texas.

This project demonstrates the museum's ability to create humanities-based digital interpretation that combines scholarly content with accessible public engagement. The same approach will be used in the proposed project to interpret the history of Southeast Texas through restored historical photographs, oral histories, historical narratives, and interactive digital experiences that connect contemporary audiences with the region's cultural heritage.
