For thousands of years sightings of hairy man-like creatures have been reported by Native Americans in this area. As more and more wilderness disappears, road side and wilderness encounters
are increasing. Pioneers reported these “Wood-Ape” creatures. Naturalist Lance Rosier, who is credited with the founding of The Big Thicket wrote about finding the body of an ape during his studies. It is not surprising to know that the Unit in Big Thicket
National Preserve named for him has reported sightings, as has the Turkey Creek and Sandy Creek Units.  Our speaker, Michael Mayes was a founding member of the North American Wood Ape Conservancy in 2005 and a well-known researcher of Sasquatch in Texas and Oklahoma.  His book, "Valley of the Apes, A Search for Sasquatch in Area X" has several chapters on his research in the Big Thicket National Preserve.  He He has appeared on numerous internet podcasts and radio programs, including Expanded Perspectives, Coast-to-Coast AM, The Paranormal Podcast, Beyond Reality Radio, Bigfoot & Beyond, and Sasquatch Tracks to discuss his research, as well as an episode of The Lowe Files on the A&E Network. This is a continuation of previous presentations, however our experience of local people not wanting to publically talk about their encouunters has led us to include written questions or sightings that may be presented before the talk anonymously and answered by Mike in the lecture.
